Race Conditions, Russian Translation, and Packages!

Today I released the 0.08 version of Nautilus Flickr Uploader, and it fixes a bug that has been around since 0.03 (more than one year ago!).

The short explanation is ‘there was a race condition while uploading the pictures that affected to fast machines only’ (really), and the long one would be a quote from the great Jamie Zawinski:

Some people, when confronted with a problem, think “I know, I’ll use threads.” Now they have two problems.

Zawinski never said that, but it’s my favourite version of the two problems original quote. Anyway, the problem is fixed!

I’ve included the Russian translation kindly provided by Anaart, and I’ve rebuilt the Fedora repository to support specifically Fedora 12, 13 and 14 (thanks to Koji), and you’ll have to download and install the new repo file (sorry for the inconveniences!).

According to Flickr, the application has +600 registered users, so go and upgrade!

Update: you know Debian/Ubuntu packages lag behind Fedora’s because I haven’t found someone to maintain them. Good news, a twitter fellow updated the DEB package to 0.08! Have I found a maintainer?

Nautilus Flickr Uploader Reached 100 Authenticated Users
Yay! I just wanted to share the good news with you.
I’m planning some new stuff to add to the already full working features in Nautilus Flickr Uploader, but not now. Now it’s time to party!

Nautilus Flickr Uploader 0.01 Screencast

My English is not that bad, but I thought I would be a good idea that Alex made a little demo of Nautilus Flickr Uploader, because she’s not as geek as me and it would give you a fresh (different?) point of view.

The application is so simple and easy to use, but let’s say that was a nice excuse to play with recordMyDesktop (it’s awesome). And here you are 2:40 of pure Perl + GTK power in action!

Moreover she discovered a bug while she was recording the demo, so we can say two things: the demo was a total success and the application it’s buggy (but fully usable! believe me!).

Btw, I’ve setup a git repository at GitHub.

Nautilus Flickr Uploader Hits the Road!
Hit the road Jack, and don’t you come back no more, no more, no more ♫.
After about a month of development (not really), stealing time to rest, here is my first release of Nautilus Flickr Uploader.
As its name states, it’s an application to upload photos to Flickr, programmed with Perl, GTK and some love. It’s not the first time I comment the idea here, and the motivations behind it.
I delayed the releasing of a public repository too much, and now the code is fully functional. I think I’ll try GitHub, but right now you can download the application (if you dare!):
Fedora 11 RPM: nautilus-flickr-uploader-0.01-1.fc11.noarch.rpm
Source code: nautilus-flickr-uploader-0.01.tar.gz
There are some things in my TODO list, and one of them is finding a nice icon for the program (may be a photo and something that suggest upload), and I’m totally unable to make it, so your help would be greatly appreciated!
Update: Jose Fco. Irles contributed DEB packages for Ubuntu Jaunty/Debian Squeeze!

Uploading Photos to Flickr, and Holidays!
A week ago I was both packaging and complaining about it, because I wanted to develop a small application to upload pictures to my Flickr account and, at the same time, do some little bulk actions over them (such as adding tags and resizing, nothing complex).
I was a big F-Spot fan, and thanks to this great application I got used to Flickr: it was so easy to upload photos to my account. I even got PRO.
But after some time I realized that was the only one feature of F-Spot I was actually using, because I don’t see the point of having a photo album (and I’m kind of using Flickr for this).
When I moved to Fedora, there were some things missing by default, such as Mono and F-Spot, and I’m kind of a default guy and I don’t feel like installing all the stuff just to upload some pictures.
And that’s why I’m programming a little tool with Perl and GTK to to the dirty job (because both things are very bothering: uploading large photos with my clumsy Internet connection, and resizing every single picture with GIMP).
I’m working on it, so expect a fresh release soon, which takes us to the next point: I’m on holidays for a week!
That’s my first 5 days break this year, and I really need it. All the financial crisis and all the economical issues are being translated into less people to do the same work and more stress, and at least (but not last) less holidays.
I’ll be in Elche, and very likely offline most of the time. You know: if you want to hang out for a beer and chat about open source et al, send me an e-mail ASAP (or call me by phone, if you know it). Happy summer everybody!
